WEEK 7
We might be dating ourselves just a bit here, but We B Zellin’ and the Real McCoys are starting to invoke images of Ali and Frazier 30-some years ago.
Two consecutive nasty, back-and-forth heavyweight bouts between two marquee contenders. And another one-run victory that hung in the balance until the final out.
Both Ws were recorded by the suddenly jellin’ Zellins (6-3), who have won four in a row, all in dramatic fashion. Sunday, it was 16-15, with the game ending on a bang-bang play at second with the tying and winning runs aboard after Mike McCoy’s resilient bunch had scored seven in a furious comeback attempt.
“The way the teams played was a mirror image of one another,” said Zellin’ coach Robert Smith, whose 500-watt smile has grown brighter recently as his thoughts drift toward a second-consecutive D’Oliveria Cup.
Zellin’ broke open a one-run game with seven runs in the final inning. But illustrating Smith’s point, the McCoys (3-3) responded with seven.
It was another balanced offensive effort for Zellin’. Winning pitcher Clyde Barrow and David Torres were 4 for 4; and Smith, Andrew Parkinson, Tom Harris, Chauncey Mabe, Manny Torres and Oscar Vargas (a home run) had three hits.
Zellin-McCoys. Might there be a Thrilla in Manilla replica for all the marbles? Stay tuned.
