WEEK 6 Continued
Jaded 12, AFDI 5: Speaking of balanced efforts, Sunday was Julie Patel’s coming out party as she had two hits, including one that helped spark a five-run sixth inning that broke open a tight game. But she wasn’t alone: Jean-Louis Monzon led off the first inning with a home run for a second straight week; winning pitcher Tom Fleming was 4 for 4, and Sean D’Oliveira, dad Steve D’Oliveira and Joe Sachitano each had three hits. Sachitano also started two double plays and added another chapter to his base-running instruction video, which is expected to go on sale after the season, likely on the black market (where it belongs). Jaded (6-1) clinched a playoff berth, as did We B Zellin’.
AFDI 16, In The Red 12: Before AFDI’s game against Jaded, it endued a scare as Nick Carr’s bunch, inspired by shortstop Henry Fitzgerald’s Ray Lewisesque fire and brimstone dugout performance, scored 12 times and ended the game with the tying run at the plate. Starting pitcher John Veysey, who had informed coach George McIntyre he was going to the bar up 16-0, returned to save his own game.
Boss Players something, Chico’s Bail Bonds 6: Like most successful people in his profession O’Connell Family boss John O’Connell was doing business during his Sunday recreation time. As money and ticket stubs furiously changed hands at the refreshment pavilion between Fields 3 and 4 at Mills, O’Connell agreed to open his books in response to a transaction. Well, at least his scorebook. But as usual, no information was forthcoming. Admit nothing, deny everything. For the winless Bail Bonds, silent Chris Mihal, playing on a gimpy ankle, made his pitching debut and clearly deserved a better fate. But the game’s highlight came in the first inning, and it’s to be filed under “Only in this league.” With the undermanned Bail Bonds batting in the first inning, outfielder Scott Winn arrived late. Rushing in from the parking lot, he was handed a bat with the bases loaded. He calmly swatted a sacrifice fly. Then while changing into his cleats, he was needed to pinch run for an injured player. He did, wearing a black softball cleat on one foot and a white sneaker on the other.
