WEEK 4 Continued

The parity theme continued on Field 4. We B Zellin’ was – and most likely is – the team to beat. However, Robert Smith’s warriors dropped two games, the second in eerily similar fashion as the Jaded-Bonds game.

While Jaded was staging its rally on Field 3, Zellin’ also was trying to nail down a 13-12 lead with two out and no one on against the Boss Players (4-1). But Boss Players catcher Denise Schreiber singled to load the bases and James Phoenix, a regular member of Zellin’ coach Robert Smith’s softball boot camp, broke his mentor’s heart when he singled over the shortstop's head, scoring two.

Earlier, Zellin’ lost 16-10 to George McIntyre’s AFDI.

Smith took heart in the play of several regulars, including Oscar Vargas, was 6 for 6 over the two games with three spectacular catches in right-center field.

“The guy is incredible,” Smith said.

Chauncey Mabe and Clyde Barrow each had five hits in the double-header, and David Torres (whose wife Mc Nelly still hasn’t forgiven him for his defection to Smith) and Phil Mullins had four. Smith was on base five times.

A disturbing scene ensued after the Real McCoys’ victory over In the Red. Samantha Darst, the stunningly beautiful 20-month-old daughter of Red second baseman Cynthia Darst, punched and kicked her dad, former league legend J. Darin Darst, while screaming. The reasons were unclear, but team sources had two theories for the outburst: One was Samantha was irate after the loss because her dad chose not to play this year, thus hurting the team. The other was she was embarrassed at how grandmother Karen Osborne was dressed.
