Week 2 Continued
The result was a stunning loss; Smith ’s first since opening day last season. For the second straight week, Zellin’ rallied late, but this time it fell short. Phil Mullins and David Torres were 3 for 3 and David’s son, Emmanuelli Torres, had two hits.
Zellin’ had the misfortune of running into a buzz saw called In The Red, whose coach, Nick Carr, had the misfortune of running into a fence in the second game. Carr was bloodied, but not beaten.
“What a day for us,” an excited Carr said. “Got two wins and five stitches.”
Cynthia Darst, whose lazy mother refused to get out of bed to watch her, took her frustrations out on Robert by going 4 for 4 and making several plays at second.
In the nightcap, Jason Lowell got In the Red going with a three-run homer, as he, too, was playing with an edge.
He arrived at the park straight from Langerado, incensed that his boy band was not allowed to perform. Still bleary-eyed and wearing a red paper bracelet reserved for the ordinary concert-goers, Lowell still played inspired.
Similarly, Henry Fitzgerald, an original member of the band New Edition, played like it was 1983 again as he dove all over the field at shortstop.
The game finally ended when the battered Carr raced in to snare Schwerdt’s blooper.
Elsewhere:
Real McCoy's 20, Boss Players 16: Hold off on the coronation of the Boss Players. The McCoys showed they will be a force this season. Chad Mullins was 4 for 4 and Mike Turnbell 3 for 4. Links Joseph, playing second base for first time, made several key plays. After the game, coach Mike McCoy turned to outfielder Reggie Hawkins, pointed to Jaded coach Ed Giuliotti and said “3-0.” The 2-0 McCoys face Jaded next week.
Jaded 12, AFDI 3: The venerable George Wilson, normally a third baseman, moved to second base and did a nice Robbie Alomar imitation, eventually ending the game on a diving stop to his right. Defense abounded as third baseman Dave Cody, shortstop Joe Sachitano and left fielder Jean-Louis Monzon also turned in nice plays. Rookie outfielder Justin Abrotsky was 3 for 3 for Jaded.
