For 33 years (according to league historian George Patten), the Sun-Sentinel has had a softball league dedicated to its employees. The league grew over time to include family members, spouses, significant others and alumni, and became one of the more talked about off-field company activities.
This February, the Sun-Sentinel informed the league that it no longer could sponsor it, due to budgetary reasons. The league seemed dead.
Except the participants wouldn't let it happen.
Within two days, the league was back in business, occupying Mills Pond Park in Fort Lauderdale each Sunday morning. Each player has paid his or her own way this season, and should be proud of doing their part to continue a long-standing tradition.
The coaches -- Jon Burstein (who stayed on until the setup was completed) Nick Carr, Ed Giuliotti, Mike McCoy, George McIntyre, John O'Connell, Sean Piccoli and Robert Smith -- received a boost in reviving the league. The contributions came in various forms, and all were appreciated. Several came from former players and company alumni:
